Important Announcements
~ One of our class behavior systems involved receiving 4 poker chips at the beginning of the day. The students keep the chips and will lose chips only if a teacher feels they are not following the expectations of our classroom. Our 5 expectations are: 1. Be Prompt. 2. Be Prepared. 3. Be Positive. 4. Be Productive. 5. Be Polite. (aka: The 5 P's) When a student chooses to not follow our expectations, they are at risk of "losing" a chip. The breakdown for this is:
1 Chip Taken: Warning
2 Chips Taken: Time out of recess
3 Chips Taken: Student will write a letter home explaining what happened. It will need to be signed and returned by a parent. You will also receive an email. After the third time of a student losing three chips, we will set up a parent/student/teacher conference.
4 Chips Taken: Meeting with Ms. Baldwin, Ms. Houghton, or Ms. Greenwood.

We are already having a great year, so there is no need to anticipate a problem, but we feel as though it's a productive way to be held accountable for following our class expectations that we have worked together to set for our class.
Math
As we move through Unit 2, we will be learning the "traditional" algorithms for addition, subtraction and multiplication, division will come later. Last week, we focused on addition and subtraction of whole number and decimals. This week, we will be learning how to solve addition/subtraction number stories and how to use probability. Study Links 2.4 – 2.8 will be assigned this week. All resources for math are on our common math web page, which you can find through our own website under "Math".
Don't forget, there is a new problem of the week up. These problems are not optional and not doing them will result in a homework infraction.

Reading
This week, students will continue to write responses to their texts in various ways. We will focus on asking questions and making predictions. With asking questions, we also understand the importance in attempting to answer the questions on our own, before reading on. We may have to change our idea once we gather more information, but we are pushing our brain to the max! With predicting, we look for evidence to support our claims as to what we thought was going to happen to the characters in our stories.
Writing
This week, students will continue to generate memoir ideas by thinking of their favorite places, people, and objects. They will study their photos and write blurbs about them. We will also be focusing on the reflective piece and used our mentor texts to identify the reflective qualities of the memoir. By the end of the week, everyone should have a "seed idea" and be ready to begin drafting.
Social Studies
This week, we will discover why the American government is so special, and why our Founding Fathers created our nation the way they did. This will tie in with the writing assignment from last week.
