Math
We have started Unit 4 and will continue on with the unit this week. This entire unit focuses on division- specifically tackling and understanding the traditional method. Some students are already very comfortable with this method, so the extra time given to practice and strengthen their skills is great. For others, this is a new skill. Do not let your student get overwhelmed with this. I told them if they were feeling confused, this is a GOOD thing because it shows that they're stretching their brain! In order for the children to be successful with this, they need to practice their multiplication AND division facts at home. It will help with longer division problems as we begin to study those.
Social Studies
Students have learned the difficulties of being involved in war and are starting to see how it lays the foundation for the revolution. Next, the children will be in small groups and will study how various taxes imposed on the colonists leave them angry. They will present their tax to the rest of the class. Ultimately, the colonists react with violence- brewing rebellion and revolution.
Reading
We will be working to complete our books and gathering of evidence based on our characters in our independent books. We have been developing theories and working hard to collect information about our characters that supports our theories. We will be using this information as we begin writing our Character Essays later this week.
Writing
Students will officially be brainstorming and collecting the information necessary for drafting their Character Essays this week. They will state their theories in their introductory paragraphs, and be using the notes they have collected to prove their theories are true. They will then work to connect the ideas for their readers, as well as apply quotes and examples from the text. The goal is to create a comprehensive 5-paragraph essay, which will be due by November 8.
We will continue to focus on Grammar as we go through this week. We had a Sentence Study last week that focused on simple and run-on sentences, as well as locating subjects and verbs/predicates. Next week, we will grow on these ideas by teaching compound sentences and the use of commas with FANBOYS and the ever-popular AAAWWUBBIS. A short, informal assessment will be given at the end of next week.
Homework
~ Reading Comprehension: "The Beginning of the World"
~ Writing: "Character Epilogue"
~ POW due Tuesday
