Important Announcements
~ Don't forget about Wednesday's math night. If you did not receive the link to RSVP, please let me know.
~ Next Friday, 10/31, is Fall Festival. It is a noon dismissal. Students are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school that day as long as the costume is school appropriate and won't scare the kindergarteners. If you are unsure if your child's costume is appropriate for school, have him or her bring in a picture wearing it and we can ask Mrs. Houghton for her thoughts. Tennis shoes are require regardless of your child's costume.
~ I have updated a bunch of pictures and videos under Paparazzi Picts! Enjoy!
Math
We have started Unit 4 and will continue on with the unit this week. This entire unit focuses on division- specifically tackling and understanding the traditional method. Some students are already very comfortable with this method, so the extra time given to practice and strengthen their skills is great. For others, this is a new skill. Do not let your student get overwhelmed with this. I told them if they were feeling confused, this is a GOOD thing because it shows that they're stretching their brain! In order for the children to be successful with this, they need to practice their multiplication AND division facts at home. It will help with longer division problems as we begin to study those.
Reading
We will be working to complete our books and gathering of evidence based on our characters in our independent books. We have been developing theories and working hard to collect information about our characters that supports our theories. We will be using this information as we begin writing our Character Essays later this week.
Writing
Students will officially be brainstorming and collecting the information necessary for drafting their Character Essays this week. They will state their theories in their introductory paragraphs, and be using the notes they have collected to prove their theories are true. They will then work to connect the ideas for their readers, as well as apply quotes and examples from the text. The goal is to create a comprehensive 5-paragraph essay.
Our grammar focus this week will be on singular and plural nouns. Since chapel planning and practice took up a lot of our time the last two weeks, we did not get to put as much time into word study as I would have liked. Therefore, we will be continuing to work on the prefixes sub-, con-, pro-, and en-.
Social Studies
We now have an understanding of how the French and Indian War led, directly and indirectly, to the Revolutionary War. Ask you student about this! We will now begin to study the Acts that the British imposed on the colonists and how they escalated the already rising tensions in the colonies. One skill that we will be focusing on during this unit is cause and effect.
Homework
~ Reading Comp: "Sacajawea"
~ Math: "Divisibility By the Digits" due Tuesday
~ Current Events due Tuesday
~ Writing: As a fun treat this week, we're doing a Wacky Headlines free writing. Students have three headlines to choose from and they have to write a news story to match. I'm looking forward to the creative papers I get to read! Here are the optional headlines...
