Math
We will be taking our unit 1 math test On Thursday. As I mentioned above, I sent home a study packet today. The packet is optional, but highly recommended. I will be emailing the answers to the parents later today. Please encourage your child to go through the study guide early and come to me with any questions, but keep in mind there are a few items on their that we will be covering on Tuesday and Wednesday.
I will also be introducing the online Everyday Math resources this week. It will give you and your student access to online games, an online Student Reference Book (SRB), and online tutorials. I will show you more about this at Parent Night.
We went over last week's POW in class today. I am posting the answer to the old one on the blog. I encourage you to look at it with your child before you begin this week's question.
Reading
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be working on keeping track of our thinking in our Reader's Notebooks, and pushing ourselves beyond the limit of simple post it jottings. We'll also start to research into the volume of our reading, and begin to work on the skill of talking to others deeply about our texts as we pair up in reading partnerships.
Writing
We had a very productive writing workshop last week, as we began to build on the skills we already have in narrative writing to conquer the more difficult genre of memoir. This week, we're keeping the question: "What life lessons have I learned and how did I learn them?" in the back of our mind as we brainstorm potential small moments to illustrate a big lesson in our life. Next week, we will select our seed idea and begin to stretch it out, using our best story-telling skills.
Social Studies
Last week, we were lucky enough to enjoy a fifth grade history moment with Ms. Manning to review where we ended in Social Studies last year. We got our minds ready for our upcoming unit- all of the events that lead to the Revolutionary War! This week, we will be watching part of a fantastic series, "America: The Story of Us," and using it to spark class-wide discussion. We will also spend some time taking about the importance of studying history and how it affects our everyday lives.
Word Study/Grammar
Last week, we learned about the four types of sentences. This week we will be discussing subjects and predicates, including complete and complex.
We are kicking off our word study with the prefixes in-, un-, mis-, and dis-. We had great conversation about them today. As the week goes on, we will be studying vocabulary words with these prefixes and looking at how the prefix changes the meaning.
Homework
~ Reading Comp: "The Stars and Stripes"
~ Writing: The students were given the memoir "Scout's Honor", by Avi, as well as four questions to answer about the reading. The questions must be answered in paragraph form. The actual reading of the story may count towards their time for reading or writing, but not both.
~ Study Link 1.7 (Monday) and 1.8 (Tuesday). 1.9 will be optional.
