Important Information
~ Wednesday is another late start day. School will start at 8:45.
~ We are very excited to be having our very first Patriot's Day on Friday. We will have a normal day of school, but students will spend the morning experiencing a small piece of what life was like for kids in Revolutionary times. A letter came home last week with information on what students should wear. There was also an email sent out to all parents last week. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Math
The main purpose of unit 5 is to review the meanings of fraction, decimal, and percent notations for rational numbers. We will also be concentrating on conversions between these notations, often emphasizing the fact that embedded in every fraction is a division problem. The ability to convert between these notations is important in solving problems in everyday life.
Reading
The bulk of reading this week will be spent mixed with writing- as students collected evidence from their books to support their thesis in their literary essay. However, while they read, I will continue pulling students individually to read to me. So far, I am THRILLED with the progress that they've made in their reading since the beginning of the year. Continue to promote reading at home. Reading many texts at their independent level is single-handedly the most important way to get them to be stronger readers. Next, we're starting a unit in nonfiction!
Writing
This week, we are finishing up our literary essays. We will be learning how to add quotes from our books to strengthen our supporting paragraphs. As in reading, our next unit will be on nonfiction. For our grammar focus this week, we will be continuing to study plural noun rules.
Social Studies
Last week, student worked in pairs to create projects on the Acts and events leading up to the Revolution. They focused on answering the 5 Ws; Who was involved?, What happened?/What was the act?, Where did it occur?/affect?, Who passed it?/Who was affected?, Why was it important to the Revolution? Students will be presenting those this week in preparation for Patriot's Day on Friday.
Homework
