7.8 Addition of Positive and Negative Numbers
Rules:
"Both addends have the same sign (both pos.+ or both neg.-), add the Absolute Values, and write the sign of the addends in front of the sum."
-6 + (-3) = ?
1. Add the Absolute Value: 6 + 3 = 9
2. Write the sign of the addends in front of the sum: -6 + (-3) = -9
"When Addends have unlike signs (one + and one -), subtract the smaller from the larger Absolute Value, and write the sign of the addend with the larger Absolute Value in front of the answer."
-8 + 6 = ?
1. Subtract the smaller from the larger Absolute Value: 8 - 6 = 2
2. Write the sign with the larger number part in front of the answer: -8 + 6 = -2

7.9: Subtraction of Positive and Negative Number
Rule - Subtracting a negative, ex. 4 - (-1) = 5, is the same as adding a positive, ex. 4 + 1 = 5.
