Important Announcements
~We had an amazing time on the 5th grade trip. I will be posting pictures as soon as I'm able to get them all downloaded.
~ Tomorrow is yearbook picture day. If you have not turned in the picture form that came home last week, please return it with your child tomorrow.
~ Our class chapel is next Thursday, October 3rd. We would love for all of you to join us. Chapel starts promptly at 8:15. Please sit in rows 14 – 16 on the left side (if facing the stage) or in the second and third to last rows in the middle.
~ We have the privilege of having author Deborah Wiles speak to us on Thursday. She will be telling us all about her writing process and helping us to improve our own writing skills.
~ Don't forget, we have chapel tomorrow.
~ Your child is bringing home a laptop take home letter today. Please take a few minutes to read over it with your child and fill out the form on the back. The class will not be able to bring their laptops home until all students have returned the form.
Reading
We are starting our new reading unit this week. In this unit we will be focusing on character development in fiction novels. Every student will be selecting a book with a strong main character. We will be focusing on growing theories about these characters and strengthening our reading skills by embarking upon a complex analysis of our characters using envisionment, prediction, inference, and interpretation. All students may be reading a second independent book as we dive deeply into their character books.
Writing
Our goal is to have our memoirs published by Friday. This week, we will be learning revision and editing strategies, and how we can play with punctuation in order to bring out the tone of our writing. We will also be reexamining our reflections to make sure they are supported by the story and that they are larger "life lessons", not story specific.
Math
We will be taking our Unit 2 assessment on Thursday and Friday. I will be having a review tutorial on Wednesday. I will be handing out the study guide tomorrow. You can also find it on the website under, "Curriculum" >"Math" > "Unit 2".
Social Studies
During the founding of our nation, may heroes emerged. Last week, we discussed what makes a hero. This week, we will be starting our "Book of Heroes". It will give the students an opportunity to choose several "heroes" from Revolutionary times, many of which they may not have ever heard of, and learn more about them. This will be an ongoing project throughout this unit. We will also be studying the geography of Virginia and the role it played in the founding of our country.
