Math
Students have finished Unit 2 and we are ready to move onto Unit 3. This week, students will work in small groups to work through the Open Response that was assigned for Unit 2. We will spend time discussing word problem strategies as we move forward. In Unit 3 this week, we will learn more about data sets and explore angle measures using protractors and compasses. Study Links will be assigned as needed.
Social Studies
Students have explored how geography played a role in the success of a growing and new community. Students also learned about the role of Indians, and saw that there were positive and negative aspects for both the settlers and the Indians in these new relationships. Next week, students will learn about how each area of the colonies developed differently (which lays the foundation for an eventual growing divide among the colonies) and the outcome of the French and Indian war. Who comes out on top at the end? The English or the French? What was the result of this war for the “victor”?
Reading
We will be continuing our character study. During read-aloud, we will be following a character to learn about the different ways a character can be described. We will then begin tracking important moments in the character's life to record how the character grows, learns, and changes as a result of those impactful events. Using this in-depth analysis into our read-aloud's character, the children will then transfer the process into their own books to develop a thesis based on their own characters. Encourage this work at home by talking to your child about the book they are reading. Not just, "what is it about?" Push them to say more about what they think about the way that their character acts, as well as providing information from the text that supports their thinking.
Writing
We will be printing out our memoirs today to share with small groups. The children will then be given a chance to write an on-demand piece to showcase all of their learning from the memoir unit. This will allow us to see growth in their understanding of the genre from August to now. The children will then begin a new unit in Writing focused on character analysis. They will be using the research they are doing in Reading to begin generating ideas focused on the characters they are studying independently in their own novels. From this information, they will be developing a thesis (or BIG IDEA) based on their character, and work over the next few weeks to identify supporting evidence in their texts to prove their thesis is true. We look forward to big thinking this unit!!
Homework
~ Reading Comprehension: "A Man Concerned With Safety"
~ Assigned writing on character

~ Many students did not complete all of the assigned math journal pages from Unit 2. We have put a post-it on their journals listing all of the incomplete pages. Students have until Friday to complete the pages. This may count as part of their 30 minutes of math.
