~ I have uploaded the pictures from the 5th grade trip to Paparazzi Picts. I am working on getting more pictures up from September.
Math
This week in math, we will be exploring triangle types and introducing methods for copying triangles. We will also be exploring the properties of polygons and the side and angle relationships in regular polygons. Angle Tangle and Polygon Capture would be great games to play for homework.
Our unit 3 math test is next Thursday and Friday. I will be passing out a study guide on Friday and there will be a review tutorial on Wednesday afternoon.
Reading
We will continue our study of characters in our independent books as we begin to take what we know about our characters to develop theories about them. We recognize that characters are very complicated. As we read, we need to constantly track what characters are doing and saying (this gives us the best indicator as to what type of character traits they possess)- but we may have to revise our ideas about them as we learn more about them. One way we will learn to do this is to gather more information to see WHY a character acts the way that they act.
Writing
Students completed an on-demand essay to show what skills they already know about essay writing. Next week, students will work with their on-demand essays to tweak them as I teach all of the essentials in essay writing. It boils down to "SAY IT, PROVE IT, SAY IT AGAIN." If students can remember this, and what each part includes, they will do great with this unit! Students will learn how to develop a strong thesis statement, supporting details to prove it, and the structure that essays take to organize and craft their writing.
Students have done a great job learning a variety of prefixes. Next week, we will introduce students to suffixes. The specific suffixes are "-y" and "-ly". A main goal of this sort will be to have students understand how adding a suffix can change how the word is used in context (the part of speech). I have loved all of the exploration that they have done with these words. They are listening more closely to language and are pushing themselves to use these words in their writing.
Social Studies
This week we will be focusing on the French and Indian War. This will take us directly in to the events that lead to the American Revolution.
