Reading
We are rereading our books to collect evidence and examples to support the reading theories we have created based on our character's personalities and struggles in life. The children are then using that evidence to write their literary essays in Writing, and include quotes directly from the text to support our theories as well. We are also finishing up our class read-aloud, The Great Gilly Hopkins, and using all of our reading strategies to collect evidence to prove the theory we have created as a class for her. The children have been exhibiting some great thinking as we have gotten to know this character very well over the past couple weeks!
Writing
Students will be completing their character essays using all of the notes they have been collecting in their Reader's Notebooks. The essay should be a comprehensive 5-paragraph essay, the paper will include an intro, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each body paragraph should include examples, evidence, and an explanation to prove their theory regarding their character is true. I am pushing back the due date on the essay until next Friday.
We are working on a new set of words this week that will be focusing on the following prefixes: pre, fore, post, and after. The words have been posted on Quizlet.
Math
This week in math, we are continuing to practice traditional division methods. We will also be discussing how to interpret a reminder based on the context of the problem (fraction, decimal, remainder...). Our math test will be on Friday, with the Open Response being on Monday. Students received a review packet today. It is optional, but I highly recommend using it to practice any concepts students are still struggling with. I will be having a review tutorial on Thursday.
Social Studies
We are continuing to study all of the acts the British imposed on the colonists. We have been discussing both the colonists' and British reactions, and how these events are influencing the colonists to find ways to fight back against the British. This week, we will be studying how groups like the Sons of Liberty helped push our country to unite.
Homework
~ Reading Comprehension: "The Stars and Stripes"
~ POW
~ For writing, students are required to write an essay on a topic they feel strongly about. This can be anything from "Coke is better than Pepsi" to "All students should be required to wear uniforms". The key is that they can support and prove whatever topic they choose. I would recommend that students talk their essays out with you before they write them. If they can't articulate a convincing argument, they either need to come up with better evidence or choose a new topic. The essay should be written as a 5-paragraph essay.
