Important Announcements (This newsletter will serve for both this week and next week.)
~ I look forward to seeing all of you at conferences this Thursday and Friday. Don't forget, students are required to attend their own conferences this year.
~ Don't forget!!! Grandparent's/Special Friends Day is on Monday, November 25th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. The fifth graders will meet their special guests right in the Alston Memorial Chapel at the beginning of the program- so all guests will go straight to the Chapel. It is a regular school day, so students WILL remain in school after the program is over. We LOVE this tradition and can't wait to see everyone! Make sure you've RSVP'd for your guest.
~ This Thursday will be a pay NUD. In order to have a NUD, students must pay $1 and wear one of the colors of the Philippines' flag. (blue, white, red, yellow) All proceeds will go to the Philippines' relief effort.
Math
This week in math we will be learning multiplication and division rules for finding equivalent fractions. We will also be spending several days focused on fractions and decimals. We will practice renaming fractions as decimals, review rounding decimals, use several different graphic models for renaming fraction as decimals, and use a calculator to find decimal equivalents for fractions.
Fraction Top-It, Fraction Top-It (addition), Estimation Squeeze, 2-4-5-10 Frac-Tac-Toe (regular and percent version), Fraction/Percent Concentration, and Fraction Of would all be good games to play as homework this week.
Because of the two short weeks, the POW will be due next Tuesday. The problem involves fractions, so students should be using everything we're learning in class to solve the problem.

Social Studies
This week in social studies, we will be focusing on the 1st Continental Congress, Paul Revere’s Ride, and Lexington and Concord. Next up, The Revolutionary War!!
Reading and Writing
The literary essay is proving more challenging that I originally thought it would be. Most students are in the editing and revision phase and in order to make sure students are putting forth their highest quality of work, I am extending the deadline to this Thursday. Next week, we will be having an end of unit on-demand piece and then kicking off our nonfiction unit after Thanksgiving.
Homework
~ Reading Comprehension: "Making the World Flat"
~ Writing: For writing, students are to revise their memoir. This does not just mean making grammatical and spelling changes. I want them to read my notes carefully use them to revise their papers to make them str
