Important Announcements
I would like to thank everyone for the kind cards and emails about my grandfather. They were greatly appreciated. The next two weeks are going to be busy and slightly crazy! I will try to keep you all undated on all of the events, but please let me know if you have any questions.
~ We will be having several tests and quizzes this week. Please see each section below for further information.
~ B & G days are switched this week! Wed, Dec 11 is now a B-Day and Friday, Dec 13 is now a G-Day. Lessons and Carols Chapel will be held on Friday, Dec 13.
~ This Friday, Jerry Pinkney will be speaking to the Lower School. He is a world-renowned illustrator and being able to hear him speak is an amazing opportunity.
~ Go Lions!!! Saturday at 2:30 our Lovett Lions will be competing in the state championship in the Georgia Dome. To show our spirit, we are having a blue and white NUD on Friday. Since it is our Lesson and Carols chapel, students may not wear shorts, sweatpants, or leggings with shorts.
~ The Paparazzi Picts are up-to-date through Grandparents' and Special Persons' Day. Enjoy!!
Math
We are wrapping up our unit on fractions, decimals, and percents. The children have been studying how to convert fractions to decimals to percents, as well as how to determine those numbers in specific scenarios. The students have also studied how to collect data and display data in both bar and circle graphs. And will finish out the unit reading and creating percentage circle graphs. Our Math written assessment will be given Thursday. The Open Response will be either Friday or Monday, depending on how much time we have after listening to Jerry Pinkney. Since many students have band practice or play practice on Wednesday, I will be having the review tutorial during the day. We will be using the whole class period on Wednesday a review time. This is a great opportunity for students to get their questions answered. I highly recommend that they spend some time studying tonight and tomorrow, so they are able to ask any questions they may have on Wednesday. I sent home a review packet and study guide today. I recommend that student try a few problems on each page, and then focus further on the skills they don't feel as confident in.
Reading
We are reading all of the non-fiction available to us to learn how to analyze the information and determine what is the most important. We are investigating narrative, expository, and procedural texts for both information and structure. Through the use of boxes & bullets, we are reading through books and articles to find and outline the most relevant information. It has been an awesome activity to practice as we begin focusing on how to take notes in Social Studies! We are also studying the way the authors write non-fiction, so we can apply all we are learning to our own design of our non-fiction books in Writing.
Writing
Students have been busily crafting their layouts for their non-fiction expert texts. The children have chosen a topic they are extremely knowledgeable in and are writing texts to teach others all they know about these topics. They have created tables of contents to consider all of the information included in their books, and will be focusing on the structure and the writing of the information this week as they begin to construct their books on the computer.
We will also be spending one last week focusing on comma usage in compound sentences, as well as studying and comparing the variety of ways to implement commas in sentences.
We are starting something new this week that will continue until the end of the year. In order to build vocabulary, I will be sending home a spelling list each week. These words will come from a variety of places, our in class readings, commonly misspelled words, ERB vocab, Social Studies... I will send the list home on Monday and put the words up on Quizlet. Students will be required to memorize the spelling and usage of the words, and we will take a quiz every Friday. Students will be expected to use the words in a sentence that demonstrates they understand the correct usage of the words. I have discussed how to write this type of sentence in class and provided numerous examples. Here is the link to this week's Quizlet. Students can use Quizlet without signing up. However, they won't be able to compete against other members of the class unless they join our class. http://quizlet.com/_acsg9
Social Studies
This week, we will be speeding through the battles of the Revolutionary War. We will then jump straight into our unit on the Constitution and the formation of our government. We will be learning about the Articles of Confederation, specifically why they weren't right for our country, and the Constitutional Convention. Considering how heated the convention got, it's amazing that they were able to accomplish anything, much less a document that still guides our country almost 225 years later.
We will be taking our next states and capitals quiz on Wednesday. This one will be on the Northeast there are only 9 states on this quiz. The students came home with a study packet today.
