Important Announcements
Math
We will be taking our unit 1 math test this week. We will take the written portion on Tuesday and the Open Response on Wednesday. We will begin Unit 2: Estimation and Computation on Thursday. I will also be introducing the online Everyday Math resources this week. It will give you and your student access to online games, an online Student Reference Book (SRB), and online tutorials. I will show you more about this at Parent Night.
Reading
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be working on keeping track of our thinking in our Reader's Notebooks, and pushing ourselves beyond the limit of simple post it jottings. We'll also start to research into the volume of our reading, and begin to work on the skill of talking to others deeply about our texts as we pair up in reading partnerships.
Writing
We had a very productive writing workshop last week, as we began to build on the skills we already have in narrative writing to conquer the more difficult genre of memoir. This week, we're keeping the question: "What life lessons have I learned and how did I learn them?" in the back of our mind as we brainstorm potential small moments to illustrate a big lesson in our life. Next week, we will select our seed idea and begin to stretch it out, using our best story-telling skills.

Social Studies
Last week, we were lucky enough to enjoy a fifth grade history moment with Ms. Manning to review where we ended in Social Studies last year. We got our minds ready for our upcoming unit- all of the events that lead to the Revolutionary War! We watched part of a fantastic series, "America: The Story of Us," and it sparked an amazing class-wide discussion. This week, we are working on a research project about the 13 colonies. You will see the end results of this project at Parent Night.
Word Study
We are kicking off our word study with a whole class sort. This will help everyone to understand the process and be ready to go when we divide into groups next week. This week we are examining the "i before e" rule and what words don't fit the rule (oddballs).
Homework
This week's required homework is...
- A reading comprehension page entitled "Changing With The Environment".
- The Problem of the Week (POW)
- Each student was given a packet of two memoirs and a page with instructions. They must read BOTH memoirs; one may count towards their four nights of reading time and the other for writing. Once they have read them, they should pick one to respond to for writing. There are prompts on the instruction sheet. The writing should be AT LEAST one page in length.
We look forward to seeing you all at Parent Night and Hopes and Dreams conferences.
