Important Announcements
Math
This week in math we will be focusing on area and volume. We will be reviewing the formula for the area of a rectangle and learning the formula for the area of a triangle and a parallelogram. We will also be learning the formula for the volume of regular prisms and right prisms.
Writing
I have given the class two extra days to finish up their "chocolate milk" essays. These will be finished by Wednesday. From there we will move on to focusing on writing to a prompt. This will help students prepare for the WRaP, as well as introduce them to one of the main types of writing they will be doing in the future. We will focus on compressing the writing process into a short period of time without forgetting everything we know about good writing skills.
Reading
As I mentioned last week, the groups have finished all of the research on their nonfiction topics and created wonderful "theories" by thinking about the broader life lessons that can be taken from their topic. This week, students will continue to work on their presentations. Once they have created their Keynotes, I will post them online so everyone may learn about their topics.
Social Studies
Students will be finished with their Industrial Revolution Comic Life by Wednesday. We are about to start studying one of the most interesting times in American history, slavery and the antebellum south. This week we will be looking at the connections between the Industrial Revolution and the way the North and South developed.
Homework
- It's hard to believe but we only have 28 days of school, and many of them are filled with fun activities like The Spring Arts Festival, Fun Day, and field trips. That means that everyday counts at this point!
- Next Wednesday after The Spring Arts Festival, we will be putting on an Easter egg hunt for our 1st grade buddies. I am going to get empty Easter Eggs for us to stuff. I am asking each child to bring in five small items to put in an egg. (candy, eraser, bracelet, small toy... anything appropriate for 1st grade that will fit in an egg) They eggs will not be labeled for a specific child, so they should not bring in anything specific for their buddy. We will be stuffing the eggs next Tuesday.
- Two important items that need signing will be sent home this Friday; the unit 8 math test and the nonfiction books. I realize that the nonfiction books are actually from December. I apologize for the delay in returning them. The LS writing department head was actually using several of them as examples of LS writing for show the middle and upper school English teachers. I was very proud that she asked to use our class' work as examples! You will notice that I did not write in any of the books and that the rubric is not stapled to the books, rather stuck inside. I was so impressed with much of the work that I wanted students to be able to keep their original books without any comments on them. All of my comments are on the back of the rubric. All you need to sign and return is the rubric itself. The book may stay at home.
