Road to the Revolution
Vocabulary
|
Following up on 4th grade's study of colonization, we will be picking up with the "Road to the Revolution". After colonizing America, Britain became increasingly distracted by wars in Europe. The more they ignored the colonies, the more the colonies felt like they were paying taxes and obeying laws set by a government who didn't care about them or understand their needs. As you can imagine, this led to some feelings of hostility on the part of the colonists. Well, you may ask, where do we go from here? Let's do some research and find out! |
The French and Indian War
Unlike a baseball game involving the Braves and the Yankees, the French and the Indians were on the same side. They were fighting the British and the colonists over territorial control. The French and Indian War was a carryover from the Seven Years War that occurred between Britain and France in Europe.
Here are a few website with more information on the French and Indian War.

Taxation Without Representation
As we learned, war is very expensive, especially when you're fighting on two continents at the same time. Now that the French and Indian/Seven Years War is over, Britain has to find a way to pay their debts. What do governments do when they need money? TAXES! Britain levied taxes, in the form of several acts, upon the colonies. As each act was passed and revolted against, tension grew between the colonies and Britain leading them closer and closer to war. Click on the links below to learn more about each act and the colonists subsequent reaction. You can also click on the links on each link for more information.
Below are some of the important people who contributed to the American Revolution.
