*This newsletter will serve for both this week and next week.
Important Announcements
~ I look forward to seeing all of you at conferences this Thursday and Friday. Don't forget, students are required to attend their own conferences this year.
~ Don't forget!!! Grandparent's/Special Friends Day is on Monday, November 24th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. The fifth graders will meet their special guests right in the Alston Memorial Chapel at the beginning of the program- so all guests will go straight to the Chapel. It is a regular school day, so students WILL remain in school after the program is over. We LOVE this tradition and can't wait to see everyone! Please let me know how many guests your child has coming and make sure you've RSVP'd for them.
~ We will be having our unit 5 math assessment this Wednesday and Thursday. I will have a review tutorial on Wednesday.
~ Because of the two short weeks, I am combining homework. Instead of having two full weeks of work, students will have 1 1/2 weeks worth to complete over the next two weeks. (3 hrs of reading with at least 1hr spent on nonfiction, 3 hrs of math, 1 1/2 hours of nonfiction following the format on the handout)
Math
We are wrapping up our unit on fractions, decimals, and percents. The children have been studying how to convert fractions to decimals to percents, as well as how to determine those numbers in specific scenarios. The students have also studied how to collect data and display data in both bar and circle graphs. And will finish out the unit reading and creating percentage circle graphs. Our Math written assessment will be given Thursday. The Open Response will be on Wednesday. I will be having a review tutorial on Wednesday afternoon. I highly recommend that they spend some time studying tonight and tomorrow, so they are able to ask any questions they may have on Wednesday. I sent home a review packet and study guide on Friday. I recommend that student try a few problems on each page, and then focus further on the skills they don't feel as confident in. We will be starting Unit 6: "Using Date; Addition and Subtraction of Fractions" next Monday.
Reading
We are reading all of the non-fiction available to us to learn how to analyze the information and determine what is the most important. We are investigating narrative, expository, and procedural texts for both information and structure. Through the use of boxes & bullets, we are reading through books and articles to find and outline the most relevant information. It has been an awesome activity to practice as we begin focusing on how to take notes in Social Studies! We are also studying the way the authors write non-fiction, so we can apply all we are learning to our own design of our non-fiction books in Writing.
Writing
Students were excited to choose topics they are extremely knowledgeable in and to be writing texts to teach others all they know about these topics. This week we will be creating tables of contents to flush out all the information we want to include in the book. We will be connecting directly to our reading study on the different types of nonfiction texts.
Social Studies
We will be finishing up the "Road to the Revolution" this week and taking a short Quiz next Tuesday. I will send a study guide home on Thursday.
Homework
~ Math: POW, SL 5.9 (Monday)
~ Reading Comp: "A Man With A Dream"
~ Current Events on Wednesday
~ Writing: Students will be working on their nonfiction topic this week. I have given them a guide for what to do. Overall, they will be writing six paragraphs, two expository, two narrative, and two procedural. There are examples of all of these in their handout.
