Important Announcements
~ Tomorrow we will be discussing Veteran's Day and the importance of honoring those who have fought for our freedom; from the Revolutionary War to those who are currently serving our country around the world.
~ Unit 4 math tests came home on Friday. Please take a few minutes to review the test with your child, sign it, and return it.
~ Conference forms will be coming home this week please sign and return them as soon as possible.
~ We have our field trip to The Temple on Wednesday. Students should wear their regular uniforms. We will leave at 9:15 and be back by lunch at 11:30.
~ Because we are missing music on Wednesday, we will be making it up on Thursday afternoon. Students should bring their instruments to school Thursday morning.
~ Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day is in two weeks. (Monday, 11/24) Please let me know how many visitors your child will have with him or her. That way I am able to order extra chairs for the classroom. Also, it is highly recommended that your child have someone with him or her, even if it's an older sibling or a parent. Let me know if there is no one who is available to attend with your child and I will arrange for a favorite teacher/resource teacher... to join him or her for the morning.
Reading
We kicked off our next reading unit today with a visit to the library. For this unit, students have selected a topic that they are interested in studying. This might be a historical event, a famous person, a place, an animal... Anything that has nonfiction books and online resources about it. They will be reading all about their topic, while learning new strategies for non-fiction reading. The final product will be a narrable on their topic.
Writing
We also kicked off a non-fiction unit in writing today. For this unit, students will select a topic they know a lot about and write a non-fiction book about it. This could be anything from "How To Have a Lemonade Stand" to "Everything You Need To Know About Chickens". The more creative the better! The key is students should not need to do any research to write the book. Over the next week, we will be narrowing down topic ideas writing basic "back of the book" blurbs on our topics.
Math
This week in math we will be learning multiplication and division rules for finding equivalent fractions. We will also be spending several days focused on fractions and decimals. We will practice renaming fractions as decimals, review rounding decimals, use several different graphic models for renaming fraction as decimals, and use a calculator to find decimal equivalents for fractions.
Fraction Top-It, Fraction Top-It (addition), Estimation Squeeze, 2-4-5-10 Frac-Tac-Toe (regular and percent version), Fraction/Percent Concentration, and Fraction Of would all be good games to play as homework this week.
We will be taking our unit 5 assessment next week. I will send the study guide home on friday.
